Toolbox 1

Today’s class mainly covers two aspects: first, a good product or brand needs its unique selling points; second, sustainable development plays an important role in the fashion industry.

Before this class, I had focused most of my learning on “how to design great products”, so when the phrase “unique selling points” came up in class, I realized that I really should not focus only on what I love. Since I plan to be engaged in the fashion industry in the future, I should develop and learn in all aspects. I should not only pay attention to the product itself, but also learn and summarize a good sales model, so that excellent products can be better promoted. Through the study of this class, I learned that to make a product have unique selling points, it needs to be recognizable, with distinctive technology or novel sales mode.

Fashion is a very energy-intensive industry, and I tried to use renewable materials to make my clothes when preparing my portfolio, but there were only a few ways I could think of at that time. In this class, I learned more about the fashion industry’s sales methods under the premise of environmental protection, as well as the practices and concepts of some brands. Such as adapting old clothes and making clothes out of recycled materials. When I was making a collection of works, I didn’t care much about whether my materials would cause pollution and waste, or whether there was a more environmentally friendly way to replace my existing ideas. After this class, I reflected on my behavior, and I felt that my previous consciousness was too shallow. No matter how good the visual effect is, it is still meaningless if it will cause pollution and waste resources to the environment.

I am interested in the transformation of old clothes. So in my task today, I focus on thinking about a way to make products that are remade from old clothes popular. I think in real life, shops offering handmade goods are very popular, such as some pottery experience pavilions. This is also a good way to interact with customers and get along with them. By analogy, I came up with the idea that the recycled old clothes can be uniformly processed into basic clothes and clothing accessories that can be designed for customers to make their own unique clothes for secondary design. However, there is a problem in the whole process, that is, the recycled old clothes are of different colors and patterns. How to make the dyeing step not pollute the environment? I investigated several environmentally friendly dyeing methods, and found that using vegetable dyes is not only environmentally friendly, but also easy to operate, and can even let customers experience this step themselves.
