Design Session 1

At the beginning of this class, the teacher first introduced the subdivision of fashion design. I have a more complete understanding of them. Next, we learned how to develop profiles from research. The most commonly used method for contour extraction is to collage the images obtained in research on the body and transform their positions, such as rotation or replication, to obtain new shapes.

In Toolbox Session, I also have the collage part. I was not satisfied with the look I drew, because the clothes I drew were not three-dimensional enough. I just drew the outer outline of the costume and didn’t add pleats. So this time when I was drawing, I practiced how to use lines to show the direction of the fabric on the human body. I also tried to draw the visual effects of my design from different angles, such as front, side and back.

Through this exercise, my association ability has been greatly improved, and I can quickly develop the shape of the same silhouette in different parts of the clothes, and then get more silhouette by changing its tilt Angle and size, or repeating the same part for many times. I also take details into account in the design, such as the shape of the collar and pocket.

It was difficult for me to draw human bodies, so I took this opportunity to practice how to draw interesting human bodies. I used Yohji Yamamoto’s sketches for reference and added my own ideas to design a human body suitable for my theme this time. This pattern is very simple and I can draw it very quickly. So I can spend more time designing clothes. And I found that a good looking body made my sketches look better. After class, I should practice drawing dynamic structure of human body, such as bending arms or legs. This allows me to show my clothes in more angles as I design them.
