Toolbox 4

Today’s task is to make collages using photos from museum research and street art research. Collage is a great way to develop inspiration during the design process. Through haphazard collage, very novel silhouettes often emerge.

The research content of my museum is porcelain. In the initial period of collage, I was troubled by the fact that most of the porcelain I investigated were vases with very similar shapes. And since the task of this class is not only collage, but also to draw the clothes that come to mind, the idea in my mind is the most common bubble sleeve.

But soon I broke through the bottleneck and realized that instead of just sticking a vase on paper as a sleeve or skirt, I could print the same photo multiple times or just use a portion of the image. My silhouette can not follow the body contour, bolder and exaggerated approach will make my collage more wonderful. In the collage, I should forget that I will draw it as a piece of clothing later, because this will limit my thoughts and make me lose more imagination when I draw.

After finishing the class assignment, I think I have well mastered the skills of collage and the methods of association, so I plan to further challenge my own ability. I drew more clothing styles for each collage. For example, in the picture of the collage, I collaged the part made into sleeves and thought about what it would look like if it was a trouser leg or turned into a collar. It was a very interesting challenge.

Clothing design needs creativity, so I try to avoid making my works under the guidance of existing clothing styles in the process of collage. Because I think today’s popular styles like hoodies, shirts and pleated skirts were very unique when they were first designed. I want my designs to be original, not to be following others. I want to be a creator.
